Surprise Flyers Fans

I find I have to keep reminding myself that the Philadelphia is now a city of champions when watching the Flyers. Last night when Todd Fedurok snuck a goal past Martin Biron with only 5:14 left in the third it may as well have been overtime. The game was over, and after a so so effort the Flyers had lost to the struggling Coyotes. And even worse, to Todd Fedoruk specifically.

And then like it was a different team in a different town the Flyers pulled their goalie and scored a goal to tie it. Jeff Carter finished off a stellar third period with a game tying goal - what luck! At least the Flyers will get one point before they lose. So how's it going to happen? Just make it to overtime and get that point. And then, sure enough, Mike Richards gets an interference penalty with only 50 seconds left. The universe falls back into place and I await the slapshot from the point that gets deflected by Braydon Coburn into the Flyers net with 4.5 seconds left. But it never comes...

Overtime is like the guy sitting alone at the bar telling about how he was a minor league pitcher - unbelievable. Not only do the Flyers kill the penalty, the Coyotes don't even get in the zone. And then 25 seconds after he breaks free from the penalty box Mike Richards is reenacting his preseason goal against the Hurricanes. And he scores. And the Flyers have come from behind and won in overtime. All in the span of 10 minutes.

Now that the Eagles season is effectively over, and the Sixers are off to a 6-6 start, the Flyers can expect to move under the microscope of all Philadelphia sports fans. Hopefully this peak is the prelude to an upcoming valley. Consistency is the name of the game at this point. Just because we have a six game unbeaten streak going doesn't mean we need to loose ten in a row again. After being back last season their back again this season. For the sake of Philadelphia fans who get further from their World Series win on a daily basis let's hope that things continue in this direction.
